Description

Small souvenir plate with text reading 'London Melbourne 19877 KM 18 Landingen in 90 uur en 17 minutem' around the outside of the plate and ' October 1934 klm vliegtuig uiver' as a second ring of text. An outlined black, grey and green image in the center of the plate shows a flying stork wearing goggles and holding an envelope in its beak. On the back of the stork are seven figures in black, representing the crew of four at the front and the two male passengers and one female passenger at the rear of the stork. Below the stork is a diagram of a map with black dots indicating both the point of departure in the Netherlands and arrival in Melbourne. With The plate is cracked in the bottom right or the plate. The makers mark is hand written saying 'Koninklijk Goedewaagen Gouda' No. 61'

History of Item

This is a souvenir plate that commemorates the Uiver flight. It was created be the Koninklijk Goedewaagen of Gouda, in the Netherlands. This plate was number 61 of what is estimated to be 300. It was made as a limited-edition souvenir plate that was made somewhere between October and November of 1934. A photograph in the collection (ARM 19.002) shows key Albury players in the Uiver story gathered together alongside gifts given to them in honour of the assistance they provided. A plate that appears to be from the same Koninklijk Goedewaagen edition can be seen in the centre row on the right hand side. This plate is a representative example of that plate in the photograph.
