History of Item
Ken Maynard was an Albury born artist who got his break as a cartoonist in 1958 contributing his Ettamogah Pub cartoons to the Australasian Post. They became a main feature of the magazine and his cartoons were run until its last edition. These cartoons were the inspiration for a chain of Ettamogah Pubs throughout Australia. There are Ettamogah Pubs in Sydney, Albury-Wodonga, Sunshine Coast and Cunderdin. In particular there are a number of his works that depict Albury and the Lavington region, which could be used at the inaugural exhibition at the new Lavington library.
However, the copyright details for the Ken Maynard images belongs to Leigh O’Brian, who apparently purchased copyright from Ken Maynard’s daughter, hence we have made direct contact with Leigh O’Brien to confirm that we can use the cartoons to exhibit and reproduce in catalogues.
Recommendation: Accepted by the Aquisition Committee 11 June 2013
That the Acquisition Committee purchases three to five Ken Maynard works for exhibition at the new Lavington Library and for the museum and social history collection.
